Hey L&D fam, hope you’re having a wonder-full week!
Here are three gems to reflect on:
An experience to inspire:
For the past three weeks, I’ve been supporting Maven’s Accelerator Course (How To Build A Cohort-Based Course) as a pedagogy coach. This course has brought together an incredible group of instructors from around the world. Check out the stats below:
Here’s one of many benefits I’ve experienced from having such a diverse cohort:
If you’re keen to create a course (or know someone who is), Maven is the place to be. Sign up for their accelerator or feel free to DM me if you have questions beforehand.
A resource to consider:
Intentional course design begins with clarity around desired outcomes. How do you define sufficient student performance? How do you define excellence?
This week District 3 (the startup incubator I worked at for the past 18 months) published their “Startup Entrepreneur Competency Model.” An assessment rubric that guides their coaching, programs & workshops.
Below is an overview from the Programs Director (my former boss and ongoing role model), Jane Somerville. You can check out the actual competency model here.
As you read through it, think about how an assessment rubric might guide your own learning design.
Pro tip: you can keep it as simple as three competencies (e.g., running interviews, making pitches, and managing time) and evaluate students across a three-point scale (e.g., not yet, approaching, or got it).
A question to ponder:
“In what experiences, problems, oddities, issues, and situations can I immerse students to make the big ideas immediately interesting, concrete, and of clear importance (Wiggins and McTighe, 2005)?”
Thanks for reading my first “digital postcard”.
I’ve started this newsletter to experiment with how I can pay it forward in terms of sharing the great stuff I’m reflecting on with others equally curious about L&D.
So I would love your feedback on how I can make upcoming editions valuable to you. Got an idea, suggestion, or burning question I could address? Hit reply and we’re off to the races. I would be grateful for your input!
Have a wonder-full week,
Alexandra
